Nokia N73 X-series

If you're tempted by Three's new flat-price X-Series mobile internet service you'll almost certainly be in the market for a new mobile phone to go with it. That's because only a handful of phones are compatible with the particular X-Series software and services.

Even so, none of those can deliver every feature on the X-Series menu. That should change as new handsets are released in the coming months, but right now the phone that ticks the most boxes is Nokia's N73.

This gives you online chat through MSN and Yahoo Messenger, free phone calls over Skype and the ability to play music and videos from your home PC using the new Orb remote access software.

It can't tap into the full speed of the Three network, which has just been upgraded from the average 300Kbps of 3G to high-speed HSDPA - which runs up to five times as fast. This will be noticeable only if you're intent on using the N73 as a mobile broadband modem for your laptop.

We expected the speed-limited N73 would put a damper on playing videos from a remote PC's hard disk using Orb, but Orb cleverly checks the connection speed and downsizes the video accordingly before it's transmitted. Your high-definition home movies will look like something from YouTube, but you can watch them without blurring or buffering.

Instant messaging chat on your mobile is quite a treat, especially when you know it's not costing you a cent. It also helps if you're already a dab hand with texting, because until we see X-Series devices with Qwerty keyboards your thumb is in for a lot of exercise.

Voice quality on Skype calls (to users on a PC as well as another X-Series phone) is excellent, although there is a short delay on both sides of the conversation.

The N73 is a superlative handset phone in its own right and traits such as the quality 3.2 megapixel digital camera, superb mini web browser and big bright screen make it a near perfect partner for the mobile internet.

Nokia N76's Steel Chassis

by mobileshop @ 2007-06-05 - 07:29:17

I've got one of the first Nokia N76 review units here. The 2MP, clamshell phone running the smartphone symbian 60 OS, isn't that different from the N75 we looked at two months ago in depth, so here's a short list of what makes it different.
First of all, it's the hardware is much sturdier in this phone than any other Nokia I've seen in awhile. Credit goes to the steel chassis.

Even the lid stood up to a firm twist. Software and spec wise, the N76 very similar to the 2MP, Symbian 60, N75 clamshell I wrote about two months ago, so you can look for more info there. The software inside lacks the Cingular additions the N75 has. If you missed it, the keypad is very RAZR like.

The N76 isn't subsidized like the N75, so its $500 and unlocked. And it doesn't have 3G/UMTS. Other than that, I love it like I love all N Series Nokia phones. And this comes in red.

Because of the price, and the lack of 3g, I might consider the AT&T N75 to be a better deal, but you have to worry about that pesky contract. I'd go for the contract. – Brian Lam
