T-Mobile dumps Google

by mobileshop @ 2008-02-18 - 13:29:14

T-Mobile will soon begin using Yahoo as its preferred mobile search provider in Europe, ending the operator’s existing relationship with Google for mobile search.

The move was seen by many as a minor coup for Yahoo, which is competing with Google and Microsoft to win the loyalty of a growing number of mobile Internet users. Others note that mobile search is in its infancy and say that the field is still wide-open.

When T-Mobile signed its original deal with Google, it made headlines as one of the earliest partnerships between a mobile operator and a search provider.

"Well done Yahoo, for knocking Google off the Web ’n Walk home page," wrote John Delaney, an analyst for Ovum, commenting on the announcement. Web ’n Walk is T-Mobile’s mobile Internet offering.

Beginning in March, T-Mobile customers in 11 European countries will see Yahoo’s mobile oneSearch by default on their phones. OneSearch is designed to make it easy for mobile users to get relevant search results and navigate through different categories within search results.

The companies plan to offer other Yahoo services to T-Mobile customers, including Flickr, Messenger, Mail, Weather and Finance. Yahoo now counts 29 operators around the world as oneSearch customers.

The deal appears to mark a strategy change at T-Mobile. When the operator launched Web ’n Walk, the service was designed to mimic the Web by minimising T-Mobile branded services and prominently offering Google, Delaney says.

Since then it has evolved to add more T-Mobile services. It is not clear yet which strategy end-users prefer. "The risk is that T-Mobile will discover that its users really preferred it when T-Mobile gave them access to the Web, and then got out of their way," Delaney says.

While the T-Mobile/Yahoo deal is a blow to Google, the search giant had a significant mobile win of its own this week. Nokia announced on that it will add Google search, in addition to its own search offering, on select phones. Nokia plans to extend the offering to more phones in the future.

Nokia has begun offering an increasing number of services, such as location-based maps and social-networking services, which could compete with offerings from operators.

"Nokia is walking a bit of a fine line because it is definitely moving into what some consider carrier territory," says Mike Wolf, an analyst at ABI Research.

So far, the market for branded search services on mobile phones, like those from Yahoo and Google, is still wide open, he adds. The search providers are increasingly interested in mobile because there is strong growth in mobile Internet usage, he says. The iPhone is contributing to that, as a device that aims to make the mobile Internet as similar as possible to the PC-based Internet.

Services from Yahoo and Google also compete with those that are branded by the operator. Companies like Medio specialise in offering technology to operators for branded search services.

Operators in the USA have been more likely to use the self-branded option rather than partner with one of the online brands. AT&T, however, is one notable exception - it uses Yahoo’s oneSearch.

Success in the mobile Internet is important enough that Wolf believes that Yahoo’s track record in the mobile market was a factor in Microsoft’s decision to try to buy the search provider. "Mobile is probably at least a consideration in the acquisition attempt," he says.

Nokia 5310 review: XpressMusic slimline

by mobileshop @ 2008-02-07 - 10:50:03

Nokia 5310 made thousands of fans with its very announcement. Packing a 16M color QVGA display, dedicated music keys, stereo Bluetooth and FM radio in a sleek thin body, this neat handset is sure to appeal to quite a lot of slim phone admirers. Plus, the XpressMusic logo is a good enough premise for music phone fans to be on the watch-out too. With the first XpressMusic bar-shape we have an amazingly thin and lightweight handset with serious sonic power.

Key features

* 9.9 mm slim and lightweight
* 3.5 mm standard jack
* Lots of preloaded applications
* 2" 16M color display with QVGA resolution
* Ambient light sensor
* Decent keypad
* Bluetooth with A2DP
* S40 5th edition user interface
* Stereo FM radio with RDS
* Dedicated music keys
* microSD card slot (2GB memory card included)

Main disadvantages

* Mediocre camera with no flash or auto focus, really slow
* Tri-band only
* No 3G
* Memory card slot under the battery cover
* Inadequate QCIF video recording
* Uneven backlighting

It seems that Nokia is more determined than ever to get its fair share of the slim phone market. Releasing 5310 right after the 6500 classic comes to prove that producing phones less than 10 mm thick is no problem for the Finns. Moreover, Nokia 5310 seems an attempt at winning the hearts of the music loving masses and, as we see it, might just be the right stuff for that.

Sony Ericsson roundup: W380, Z555, W350, T280 preview

by mobileshop @ 2008-02-07 - 10:49:14

We got our hands on several unreleased Sony Ericsson mobiles and we wasted no time in showing you the ins and outs of those babies. Writing full reviews of the devices seems pointless at this time as they are all not final versions, however they are good enough for a quick-and-dirty hands-on article.

Today's big band consist of Sony Ericsson W380, Sony Ericsson Z555, Sony Ericsson W350 and finally, Sony Ericsson T280 (mentioned in the order of appearance).

We are not going to do a feature comparison since they all are positioned in different market segments. Instead we will be focusing on the new features they are bringing to the Sony Ericsson portfolio and how well they are implemented. All the devices we received for reviewing are working prototypes - we saw some bugs and unexpected freezes, but that's normal at this stage. Nevertheless, they give us a pretty good idea of what the final product will be.

Announced on 6th November 2007, the Sony Ericsson W380 is a modest Walkman phone that comes in the clamshell form factor. It sports tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and has a 1.3 megapixel camera. It surely has a display to match those specs (read lower midrange) in the face of the 1.9" 262K color TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels and a hidden external OLED one with a resolution of 36 x 128 pixels. The stereo Bluetooth and the FM radio complement the bunch.

The most exciting about a run-of-the-mill handset like the W380 is the brand new gesture control. It allows you to mute calls or silence the wake-up alarm with a wave of your hand. The external touch-sensitive music controls also deserve attention - they use the hidden external display to display information and they have haptic feedback, producing light vibrations when pressed.

Samsung F490 preview

by mobileshop @ 2008-02-07 - 10:47:59

The Samsung F490 follows a trend that we welcome - touchscreen-based user interface and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera. Add a widescreen 3.2-inch TFT display and a slim profile, and it already sounds like a juicy deal. While we will be doing a full review on the Samsung F490, we waste no time but present you with the low-down on this baby with a quick-and-dirty overview.

The Samsung F490 resembles Samsung F700 but it lacks the hardware QWERTY keypad of its sibling. Just by looking at it, our first impression is that it's obviously aiming at taking down the LG Viewty that is already available and gaining speed. We'll see about that later on with a little impromptu feature comparison.

HTC Touch Cruise review

by mobileshop @ 2008-02-07 - 10:46:30

Pocket PCs have been keeping us busy these days. Just as we gave you LG KS20, it's time for our one-on-one with the HTC Touch Cruise. And hey, are those workhorses getting sexier or what. As one of our readers sharply observed, those devices just don't have to yell corporate or geek any more. One of the best looking Pocket PCs around, the HTC Touch Cruise will surely turn heads. Besides, its feature set is on par with the attire, which explains our eagerness to put it through its paces. Wi-Fi, HSDPA, 2.8" Touchscreen display and a 3 megapixel camera surely make it one of the most loaded devices around. And, not least, we just couldn't wait to rev up the new TouchFLO.

Key features

* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
* 3G with HSDPA
* 400MHz Qualcomm processor
* 128MB of RAM
* 2.8" 65K color touchscreen TFT display with QVGA resolution
* Integrated Qualcomm GPS receiver
* TomTom satnav software pre-bundled, one free map included
* Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
* 3 megapixel camera with autofocus
* Sleek design
* Enhanced HTC TouchFLO interface
* Jog-wheel D-pad
* Great picture gallery
* Retail package is rich in content
* Good battery life

Main disadvantages

* No hardware keypad
* Inadequate video playback capabilities
* Paint starts to peel off very quickly
* Display image quality is a bit disappointing and is practically illegible under direct sunlight
* Photo processing issues

HTC Touch Cruise is surely one of the most interesting Windows Mobile Pro devices to hit the shelves recently. It features the new version of HTC's TouchFLO interface and one of the heaviest feature sets in the PocketPC class. It is very close in terms of specifications to the omnipresent HTC TyTN II, except for the hardware QWERTY keyboard. However the Cruise is incomparably lighter and thinner and - as we see it - much better looking. Not that looks are the first thing about a PocketPC.

Sony Ericsson K660 preview: First look

by mobileshop @ 2008-02-07 - 10:45:03

Announced in November and yet to be released, the Sony Ericsson K660 is a polished 3G bar, which sneaks some high-end goodies into the midrange. Besides HSDPA and enhanced web browsing, the undoubted focal point, K660 offers a balanced feature set including Walkman Player 3.0, a QVGA display, the three-soft-key layout and the enhanced Media Center.

Sony Ericsson K660 offers quad-band support and EDGE, USB and stereo Bluetooth completing the connectivity options.

A quick glance at the specifications of the mid-range Sony Ericsson K660 shows a lot of similarities to the just released K630. A definite advantage of the K660 is the 262K color display of QVGA resolution and the quad-band GSM support. Both handsets offer 32MB of internal memory, further expandable through the Memory Stick Micro card slot. The camera module is also the same - a two megapixel snapper with no autofocus.
